The 1898 Society
"Bravo Boosters" and Fundraising Activities
"Bravo Boosters" are local citizens and businesses that support the 1898 Society's efforts in raising needed funds. They support the 1898 Society's efforts either through direct monetary or in-kind donations, or by volunteering their time and efforts to assist directly with fundraising activities.
Blacksburg Police Officers' call signs all start with "Bravo", the phonetic alphabet letter for "B", standing, of course, for Blacksburg. From this, we derived the name of "Bravo Boosters", indicating their direct support for Blacksburg Police Officers and Firefighters.
On July 27, 2007, the 1898 Society held a hot dog plate sale and raffle as a fundraiser; we raffled off a Char-Broil gas grill.
Wendy Stowe of Blacksburg was the winner of the grill... congratulations, Wendy!
This event was held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department, with all proceeds going to support 1898 Society projects.
Hot dog plates cost $5.00, and raffle tickets cost just $1.00.
The fundraiser went very smoothly, and we would like to thank the following Bravo Boosters for their assistance:
Our grill cook, BPD Officer Dennis Scoggins, for all the time spent grilling some awesome hot dogs!
Food Lion of Blacksburg (Store #2105), for providing the food and supplies. Special thanks to Manager Bruce McCarter and Assistant Manager Tommy Yoe for making the hot dog sale not only possible, but a resounding success!
Lowes Home Improvement of Gaffney, for assisting with getting the gas grill.
In 2005, the 1898 Society held a Captain's Choice charity golf tournament as a fundraiser.

We had 8 four-person teams compete in the event:

"Danny's Rejects"* (Ron Sisk, Jason Martin, Jason Gilfillan, C.T. Coggins)
* There's an inside joke on that one. Ask Danny Ham. [smile]

Burns Chevrolet (Bobby Sellars, Bill Vinsett, Bo B., Jim Autry)
Sertoma #1 (Mike Martin, Mike Ellis, Dennis Ramsey, Allen McIntyre)

* with some help from some of the Blacksburg PD boys!
Prizes were awarded in several categories. The winners were: "Closest to the Pin" - Wayne Cobb, "Longest Drive" - Scott Hammett, and "1st Place Team" - American Community Bank. No one managed to win the "Hole-in-One" Contest, with a grand prize of a new pick-up truck offered by Burns Chevrolet of Gaffney.
The Entry fee was $200 per four-player team, and the fee included two mulligans and one red tee per player.
The Hole Sponsorship fee was $100 per sponsor, and other (Associate) sponsorships were received as well, such as door prize donations.
We would like to extend a very special word of thanks to Mrs. Jan Moss of the Palmetto Bank in Blacksburg. Jan was one of the event coordinators, and without her help and dedication, the event would not have been possible.

In 2005, the 1898 Society raised funds to send Blacksburg Police Officers to the Police Week in Washington, D.C. in support of the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial (Washington, D.C.) services.
The National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial is a fitting tribute to all of the officers who have given their lives to protect their communities.
At this annual event, the names of the officers killed in the previous year were added to the memorial wall. During the services, family members of these brave officers were also present, to share their grief and to receive the support of other family survivors and law enforcement officers.
Also, our officers had the opportunity to interact with other officers from all around our nation, as well as officers from other countries, such as Canada and England, who came to show their support as well.
Because of supporters such as these, together we were able to continue to send officers as ambassadors representing Blacksburg, South Carolina, and to show the nation that we have not forgotten those who gave the final and most costly measure of devotion to duty and dedication to their fellow citizens.
We are proud to have local businesses and community members as our partner in this noble effort. They have our sincerest gratitude.
