A non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting Blacksburg Police Officers and Firefighters through fund-raising and community donations

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of The 1898 Society is to improve public safety in Blacksburg, South Carolina by providing resources and support to the Blacksburg Police Department (BPD) and the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD) that are not readily available through other means. The 1898 Society is a publicly-supported, tax-exempt charitable foundation.

The 1898 Society derives its name from the date when the building which houses the Police Department was built.

THE PROBLEM

The cost of training and equipment for the BPD and BVFD to respond effectively to a wide range of social problems far exceeds the tax dollars currently committed to law enforcement and firefighting.

For organizations like the BPD and BVFD to maintain a distinction of excellence in the services they provide, private sector assistance is needed. The programs and activities sponsored by The 1898 Society are made possible by donations from individuals, businesses, and civic groups.

WE BELIEVE...

The 1898 Society supporters such as yourself believe that public safety is really a community project. Police and fire departments everywhere are tragically under staffed and under funded, lacking critical equipment and training.

With local, state, and federal budget cuts in place, important services, training, and equipment are being written off as "not affordable". The 1898 Society supporters believe that "not affordable" is not acceptable when it comes to the safety of Blacksburg citizens and the BPD and BVFD personnel.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Public safety cannot rest on the shoulders of law enforcement and fire agencies alone.

As much as we all need the police and firefighters, they need our support as well.
Please join us in our important work by contributing as generously as you can.

Send your contributions to The 1898 Society, P.O. Box 517, Blacksburg, South Carolina 29702.

Please designate on your check or money order whether you want your donation to go to the Police Officer's Account ("POA"), the Firefighter's Account ("FFA"), or "Both".

Please consider supporting this effort to help the dedicated officers and firefighters who continue to fight a tough battle to serve and protect the citizens of Blacksburg. Donations and contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated.

SOME OF OUR PROJECTS

  • Advanced Equipment.

We support the purchase of equipment for operational use by police and firefighters in the line of duty. Specialized, high-tech equipment will enhance our officers' and firefighters' ability to better protect and serve our community. This equipment consists of things not covered by our normal operating budget; items such as fuel, vehicles, uniforms, bullet-resistant vests, and other necessities are covered under our current departmental budget.

Some examples are thermal imaging devices (for night vision for detecting criminals and for locating of victims inside of fires) and in-car video cameras (for documenting searches and arrests, to improve conviction rates and promote officer safety).

  • Improved Education and Training

We support educational and training programs for police officers and firefighters.

Unique training programs will provide officers and firefighters with the ability to implement and utilize innovative approaches to complex public safety problems.

  • National Law Enforcement Memorial.

We support sponsoring our police officers to attend the National Law Enforcement Memorial services (a.k.a. Police Week) held annually in Washington, D.C.

Officers and deputies attend the memorial services from agencies all across America, as they pay tribute to those officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country, their communities, and their fellow citizens.

Additionally, this Memorial service provides unparalleled opportunities for our officers to network with officers from other agencies, allowing the growth of contacts which can prove vital in defending our homeland security.

  • South Carolina State Fireman's Convention.

We support sponsoring our firefighters to attend the South Carolina State Fireman's Convention, held annually in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Firefighters attend the Convention from agencies all across South Carolina.

The Convention provides our firefighters an opportunity to attend specialized training classes and seminars, to attend firefighters' memorial services, and to make face-to-face contact with vendors and to preview the latest innovative types of firefighting equipment.

WHERE DOES YOUR SUPPORT GO?

  • 100% of your donation supports the four specific areas listed above.

  • Our board members are all volunteers who have committed to donate time and resources for the operation of the foundation.

  • None of your donation is used for operational expenses, which means that 100% of your donation directly helps officers and firefighters in our community.

Send your contributions to The 1898 Society, P.O. Box 517, Blacksburg, South Carolina 29702.

Please designate on your check or money order whether you want your donation to go to the Police Officer's Account ("POA"), the Firefighter's Account ("FFA"), or "Both".
